Day 1, Sittingbourne to Chalons-en-Champagne

Up at 5, on the road at 6. Uneventful run to Eurotunnel. Then came check-in. As we were fairly early, we got offered and earlier train. Me the 7:24, Grizzly the 7:36. How that happened, I don't know. Wasn't a problem in the end, as there was loads of space on the train and it didn't seem to matter what letter was on the screen hangar.

I got chatting to a guy from close to Loch Lomond. He was on his way to Majorca, riding a Honda Transalp, the automatic version. His wife was flying to meet him, as like Catherine, she hates being on the back.

As we were about to disembark, I noticed Grizzly's headlight wasn't on, only sidelight. Not the first time he's had this issue. He carries a spare though and fitted it once we got to the hotel.

We had a nice relaxing ride down. There was no need to rush, especially as we had gained an hour with the early train. We had a couple of stops for food/drink, one for fuel and one at a memorial, Monument National des chars d'assaut, which commemorates tank crew killed during WW1. There's a replica French tank of the period and also one from the 60s. I had an inkling that we've stopped there before but Grizzly said not. It must be at something similar but can't think where.

Arrived at the hotel at 16:45. It's out of town but OK, we didn't plan on sightseeing.

The hotel looked a bit pricey for dinner, so we found a place 5 minutes walk away, where we had pizza and, of course, some beers. Beer count 2. Someone keep count for me, eh? Pizza was very tasty and we could see the guy making them, just like pizza express.

Below are a few pictures from the day.

Tomorrow we have a few stops planned along our 216 mile ride. Make sure you come back to find out where.

  1. Is that monument near the Chemin des Dames? We went past one with some tanks.
